This expected increase in the current campaign, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, cited by Jornal de Angola, can be justified by the expansion, in general terms, of the various planting rows, with an emphasis on cereals, which should increase by around 9.3 percent to 3.79 million tons.
Agricultural production grew in the last campaign. During the 2023/2024 campaign, 26,989,727 tons of various products were produced in the country, which corresponds to an increase of 4.6 percent compared to the 2022/2023 campaign.
According to the data, cited by Jornal de Angola, the production of roots and tubers and fruits grew by around 8.5 percent to 15.74 and 7.35 million tons, respectively, while legumes and oilseeds increased by around 8.3 percent to 703 thousand tons, which could thus increase significantly.
The analysis by the Ministry also indicates that, on corporate farms, in the 2022/2023 campaign, the planted area totaled 522,770 hectares, with cereals representing 48 percent of the total, followed by legumes and oilseeds and roots and tubers, with 17.6 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively.
Also on these farms, there was a 3.6 percent increase in the planted area, compared to the same period in the 2021/2022 campaign.
As for the harvested area on both family and corporate farms, the data indicate that in the 2022/2023 campaign it totaled 5.4 million hectares, with each farm harvesting, respectively, 90.9 and 9.1 percent.
In the 2022/2023 campaign, the cereal harvest reached the largest area on both farms, corresponding to 54.4 percent of the total harvested in all rows, with almost all (92.1 percent) belonging to family farms and 7.9 percent to corporate farms.
During the aforementioned campaign, on family farms, 4.9 million hectares were harvested, representing an increase of around 1.2 percent in relation to the total area harvested, with the emphasis being on cereals (55.1 percent) and legumes and oilseeds (19.7 percent). Meanwhile, on corporate farms, according to data cited by Jornal de Angola, 4.8 million hectares were harvested, representing an increase of four percent in relation to the same previous period.
