Angola falls to Mali and misses the semi-finals of Afrobasket 2021

The women's national basketball team's dream of winning the Afrobasket 2021 trophy was interrupted this Thursday, following a 74-53 defeat against Mali.

From the beginning, the Malianas took control of the game, having entered immediately winning by 20-7. At half-time the advantage grew, with the result settling at 46-21. The third quarter was again one of insecurity for national players (64-30), with the last period marking the superiority and victory of Mali players (74-53).

Despite having starred in the worst performance of the 'five' nationals in Afrobasket, the selection never turned its face to the fight, always trying to regain ground for the Malians. Highlights were the posts Cristina Matiquite (15 points) and Avelina Peso (11 points).

After failing to reach the semi-finals, Angola will now dispute the fifth to eighth place qualifiers. The matches start this Friday and the national team will face Egypt. The game is scheduled for 14:00. In the other match of these qualifiers, Mozambique faces Côte d'Ivoire (11:00).

Afrobasket continues to the semi-finals, even imposing an "early final" this Friday, with the clash between the teams of Nigeria (reigning champions) and Senegal (runners-up). The two best teams in the competition – without any defeat so far – compete for access to the final at 20:00 at the Palace of Sports of Yaoundé, in Cameroon.

The other semi-final will be played between Cameroon, the host team for the competition, and Mali (17:00).

The final will take place on Sunday at 18:00.
