Pope Francis nominates Angolan Bishop Luzizila Kiala Archbishop of Malanje

Pope Francisco appointed Angolan bishop Luzizila Kiala, 58, to the position of Archbishop of Malanje, replacing Archbishop Benedito Roberto, who died in 2020 from illness, reports the Catholic Broadcaster of Angola.

The appointment of Luzizila Kiala, bishop of the Angolan diocese of Sumbe since 2013, was made public in a statement issued by the Apostolic Nunciature of Angola and São Tomé.

The new Archbishop of Malanje studied theology at the Major Seminary of Cristo Rei, in the province of Huambo, and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he obtained a doctorate in Spiritual Theology.

Luzizila Kiala, who was born on November 19, 1963, in the municipality of Damba, province of Uíje, was ordained a priest in his homeland on August 23, 1992 and has already held the position of vicar general of the diocese of Uíje.

The Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) expressed "joy" at the appointment of Archbishop Luzizila Kiala to the position of Archbishop of Malanje, according to its spokesman, Belmiro Chissengueti, guaranteeing to accompany his work "with much prayer".
