Angola received more than 2000 requests for death certificates of victims of the political conflict

The Government registered, in the last three months, 2051 requests for the issue of death certificates, as part of the reconciliation process in memory of the victims of the 27 years of political conflict in Angola.

:

The information was advanced this Wednesday by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Francisco Queiroz, also the coordinator of the Commission for the Implementation of the Reconciliation Plan in Memory of the Victims of Political Conflicts (CIVICOP).

Francisco Queiroz informed that from May of this year to the present date about one thousand certificates were produced and 309 death certificates were delivered to the respective families.

According to the minister, the identification process of the bones relies on eight international specialists, forensic doctors, being four portuguese, two brazilians and two south africans.

The minister stressed that state-of-the-art equipment has been acquired to locate the mortal remains and to provide the laboratories with technical means and specific chemical products for DNA exams.

The holder of the Justice and Human Rights portfolio expressed concern about the lack of conditions for storage and conservation of bones in the provinces of Luanda, Malanje, Kwanza Sul, Huambo, Moxico, Bengo and Cuando Cubango.

The minister also said that the bones that, for some reason, are not identified, will be deposited in a memorial to be built next to the National Assembly.

In the second phase of the process, Francisco Queiroz added, the process will continue with the delivery of death certificates and all other planned works.

Francisco Queiroz appealed to all angolans to continue united in the construction of a new type of relationship, so that episodes like the one of May 27, 1977, date marked in the country with an attempted coup attempt, never happen again.

On May 27, 1977, an alleged coup attempt, in an operation apparently led by Nito Alves - then Minister of Interior since the independence (November 11, 1975) until October 1976 - was violently repressed by the regime of Agostinho Neto, the first President of Angola.

This year, for the first time, after 44 years, the Government, as part of the tribute to the memory of all Angolans who were victims of the political conflicts in Angola, between November 11, 1975 and April 4, 2002, also paid tribute to the citizens who died due to the May 27, 1977.

On the eve of the tribute, the President, João Lourenço, apologized "in the name of the Angolan State for the great evil that were the executions."

"This is not the time to point fingers looking for the guilty. It is important that each one assumes his responsibilities in his part. It is thus that, imbued with this spirit, we have come to the victims of the conflicts and to Angolans in general to humbly request, on behalf of the Angolan State, our public apologies for the great evil that was the summary executions at that time and under those circumstances," said João Lourenço.
