Covid-19: Angola increases testing capacity and records 51 more cases

Angola reported 51 new cases of covid-19 after processing 1834 samples in 24 hours for the first time, and also created a testing area at the airport to serve domestic flights, which were resumed this Monday.

The information was advanced by the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, in the daily epidemiological balance in Luanda.

Among the new cases, two were registered in Zaire, one in Kwanza Norte, one in Cabinda and 47 in Luanda, being 31 male and 20 female, aged between 22 and 82 years.

Two Angolans, aged 52 and 73, died from the disease and 23 recovered.

Angola has a total of 3439 infected, of whom 136 died, 1324 recovered, and 1979 were active, including one critically ill and 16 severe.

The laboratories increased their testing capacity and were able to process 1834 samples, a cumulative total of 65,951.

Franco Mufinda also pointed out that a testing area was created at the 4 de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda to serve domestic flights, which were resumed this Monday and passengers were required to pre-board a test.

This area has thermal screening areas, registration, testing, post-test psychological counseling and waiting room.

This Monday 105 passengers were tested on their way to Cabinda, with two results reactive to IGG markers.

There were also 525 drivers tested, with 24 being reactive.

Another 198 passengers who were in home quarantine were tested, and five reactive results were obtained.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 924,968 deaths and more than 29 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a balance made by the French agency AFP.

In Africa, there are 32,625 confirmed deaths in more than 1.3 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in the continent.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases. Angola has 136 deaths and 3439 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4996 cases), Cape Verde (44 deaths and 4813 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 deaths and 2303 cases), Mozambique (35 deaths and 5269 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 906 cases).

Brazil is the Portuguese-speaking country most affected by the pandemic and one of the most affected in the world, accounting for the second number of deaths (more than 4.3 million cases and 131,625 deaths), after the United States of America.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
