Order of Doctors calls for independent investigation of doctor's death in Luanda

The Order of Doctors of Angola (ORMED) requested a new independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the late doctor Sílvio Dala, after being approached by the police for not wearing a face mask.

:

In a press release, signed by the president, Elisa Gaspar, ORMED requests an "immediate review of the Presidential decree, which requires individuals to wear a mask alone in their vehicles, since although there is some controversy on the matter, no there is enough scientific evidence to support such massive implementation ".

The order recalls that that class of professionals "loses one of the few doctors he has and hundreds of children have lost their doctor and the opportunity to be followed by a qualified professional".

"ORMED deeply regrets the premature death of this professional at a time when the country is facing a pandemic that demands a lot from the very few professionals on the job", reads the document.

Regarding the police, the order condemned his behavior "which, ignoring all the mitigating factors, dispensed with its pedagogical role, taking a properly identified professional to the police station, visibly exhausted physically for having completed more than 32 hours of work in a row, obligatorily using face mask at his workplace, so he chose to spend a few minutes breathing fresh air while driving home, alone, in his own vehicle ".

After assessing the facts, ORMED considers the circumstances surrounding the detention and death of the doctor to be unclear, "since the National Police pronouncements are not met, which results in a gray area to be clarified".

According to the document, "a simple observation of the corpse's external habit clearly shows a significant injury, with abundant bleeding, which usually does not happen with simple abrasions".

The Ministry of the Interior in its note on the matter claimed that the doctor, after being led to a police station by the police, to pay a fine, "minutes later, he showed signs of fatigue and began to faint, having an apparent fall, which caused slight injuries to the head region ".

"ORMED values the suitability of the National Police and considers it a respectable and honest entity, dedicated to guaranteeing order, public tranquility and the protection of citizens, however, it asks those entitled to a new investigation, regardless of the circumstances in around this young doctor from whom the country so much expected ", urges the note.

The Ministry of Health appealed for the calm of the medical community and expressed its "deepest dismay at the physical passing of Dr. Sílvio Dala, clinical director of the maternal and child hospital in Ndalatando, seconded on a training mission at the Pediatric Hospital David Bernardino, in Luanda, on the night of September 1, when he was in police custody, under circumstances not yet fully understood ".

The National Union of Doctors of Angola (SINMEA) has scheduled, for Saturday, a march that will end a period of seven days of mourning, which started this Monday, on the death of doctor Sílvio Dala.

In its message this Sunday, the Ministry of Health announced that it has joined the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of the Interior, which have instituted a criminal proceeding to clarify the real circumstances in which the unfortunate event occurred, as well as the respective accountability of eventual prevaricators.
