According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there were 7665 new cases in the 55 member states of the organization and 6803 more were recovered.
The largest number of cases and deaths continues to be registered in Southern Africa, with 687,703 infections and 15,930 deaths. South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, accounts for 636,517 cases and 14,889 fatalities.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 248,297 people infected and 8987 dead, and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 164,365 and that of fatalities to 2465.
In the East African region, the number of cases of covid-19 is 143,649 and 2852 deaths, and in Central Africa there are 55,375 cases and 1049 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 5530 deaths and 99,863 cases, followed by Algeria, with 1556 deaths and 46,364 cases.
Morocco counts 72,394 infected and 1361 fatalities.
In the six most affected countries are also Nigeria, whose number of infected people has been revised to 55,005 (after 59,905 infected were reported on Sunday) and 1057 dead, and Ethiopia, where 57,466 infected and 897 died.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.
Angola records 117 deaths and 2965 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4,972 cases), Cape Verde (42 deaths and 4330 cases), Guinea-Bissau (38 deaths and 2,245 cases), Mozambique (27 deaths and 4444 cases) ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 dead and 896 cases).
