Operator ready to explore Angola's “huge rail tourism potential”

A national tour operator, promoter of the “Mozambique Tourist Train”, which next Saturday should gather close to 70 tourists, defended that the railway tourism potential of Angola, “still dormant”, should be leveraged with “greater sharpness”.

The "Tourist Train of Mozambique", an initiative of the Travel and Tourism Agency Versatour with the support of the Railways of Mozambique (CFM), province of Namibe, aims, above all, to diversify the offer of tourism in the southern region of the country.

For one of the promoters, João Lopes, who praises Angola's "enormous rail tourism potential", only such initiatives should "show and exploit this potential in a concrete way", so that it can leave the "lethargy in which it still finds itself" .

"This tourism is dormant," he noted, noting that the conditions are created to do more.

But, he stressed, there has been no sharpness on the part of partners and tourism operators and it is the proof that we want to try to make sure that it is possible to use the railways to do tourism ".

According to the official, Saturday's initiative should be rotating and quarterly, "depending on market conditions": "To try to prove that it is possible to put the train over the lines and diversify the offer".

"The idea is to diversify this offer and, as we are in the southern region, fortunately we are suspicious and, then, we try to create this attraction to be another offer with regard to the tourism sector", he said in an interview to Lusa.

The tourist train will depart from the CFM central station with stops at the Serra station, where tourists should enjoy the Serra da Chela viewpoint and also wind through Chela to the municipality of Bibala, inland.

According to the same source, the stop at Bibala fits into the social component of the initiative, where in addition to cleaning the locomotive, due to the covid-19, tourists will donate basic food baskets to the most disadvantaged populations.

The organization also has a tour in Lubango-Menongue to Cuito Cuanavale.
