Africa accounts for 23,616 deaths due to the covid-19 pandemic

The total number of deaths from covid-19 is this Wednesday of 23,616 in Africa, a continent with close to 1.1 million infected by the disease, which mainly affects the southern and northern regions, according to the most recent official data.

The continent accounted for 23,616 deaths (another 34 deaths in the last 24 hours) caused by the new coronavirus, in a universe of 1,057,599 infected (over 1635), with the number of people declared as recovered from the disease rising to 745,530 (over 1092), according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the most recent data from the official reports of the 55 member countries of this organization.

The largest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continue to be registered in Southern Africa, with 593,840 infected and 11,313 fatalities.
In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, counts 563,598 infected and 10,621 dead, figures that have not been updated in the past 24 hours.

Northern Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 179,055 infected and 7,185 dead and in West Africa the number of cases has risen to 141,635 and that of fatalities to 2110.

In the East Africa region, there are 92,540 cases and 2044 deaths and in Central Africa 50,529 cases of infection and 964 deaths are recorded.

Egypt is the second country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, accounting for 95,666 infected and 5035 deaths, following Algeria, which has 35,156 cases and 1299 fatalities. In these two cases, these are numbers that have not been updated in the past few hours.

Among the five most affected countries are also Nigeria, which has 46,867 infected and 950 deaths (the same figures as in the last 24 hours), and Sudan, with 12,033 cases and 781 fatalities.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (2920 cases and 33 deaths), followed by Mozambique (2481 cases and 17 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (2088 cases and 29 deaths), Angola (1735 infected and 80 dead) and São Tomé and Príncipe (878 cases and 15 dead).

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4821 infected and 83 deaths, a number that has remained constant for several weeks.
