Angola expands hemodialysis services to more provinces

Angola has made "significant progress" in expanding hemodialysis services through the creation of new units in several provinces. This was noted by Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta, who noted that projects are underway to establish hemodialysis centers in Namibe, Cubango, Moxico, Lunda Norte, Malanje, and Lunda Sul, the latter province of which has a pediatric referral hospital in an advanced stage of construction.

The minister also highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring that this type of service is available in all areas of the country, enabling closer and more humane monitoring of patients with kidney disease.

Quoted by Angop, Sílvia Lutucuta stated that the expansion of these services aims to reduce the need for long trips for chronic patients, especially those coming from areas further away from large urban centers.

Speaking in Lubango, where she delivered new equipment to the Lubango Central Hospital, the Minister of Health emphasized that the ministry she heads is also committed to training specialized professionals and implementing modern equipment, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of the new units.

According to Angop, this investment is part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve the quality of hospital care and ensure greater equality in access to health services in the country.

The minister also took the opportunity to recall that the hospitals offering the most dialysis are in Luanda, Benguela, and Huíla.

New Maternal and Child Hospital in Lubango to be Completed Next Year

During her visit to Lubango, Sílvia Lutucuta also visited the construction site of the Maternal and Child Hospital in Lubango. On that occasion, the minister announced that the future hospital, which has been under construction since 2023 in the new Eywa development, will be completed next year.

"The idea was to complete it this year, but that won't be possible. However, in the first half of next year, we will certainly have our hospital fully operational," she said, as quoted by Angop.

The new hospital, which is being built by Vedo Developments Ltd and overseen by DAR Angola, will have seven floors, including a basement, parking for 246 cars, and a capacity for 300 beds.

Among the various services for which this infrastructure is being designed are obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, and pediatrics, including an operating room, emergency room, outpatient clinics, and inpatient and radiology areas.

The minister stated that the future unit is designed to offer medium- and high-complexity services in the specialties of gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, and pediatrics, highlighting the implementation of intensive care units for newborns, children, and pregnant women in critical condition, along with support spaces for childbirth and postpartum care.

A hemodialysis center, an operating room with modern technology, a clinical analysis laboratory, among others, were other services highlighted by the minister. She also announced that the future hospital will also have a pediatric training center, focusing on the medical and surgical fields, aimed at the continued training of healthcare professionals in the south of the country.

It should be noted that, in Lubango, the minister also visited the Lubango Central Hospital, where she inaugurated the new morgue and physiotherapy service.
