Covid-19: Africa with 857 more dead and 32,398 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 857 deaths due to covid-19 in the past 24 hours, for a total of 164,383 deaths, and 32,398 new cases, according to official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number infected in Africa since the start of the pandemic is 6,475,582.

The number of recovered is now 5,674,552, of which 23,729 were registered in the last 24 hours, according to the same source.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,118,638 cases and 85,188 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,377,823 cases and 69,775 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the numbers of covid-19, reached 1,852,776 infected and 52,696 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 783,509 infections and 16,615 deaths and the West Africa region has 518,848 cases and 6,750 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest cases of infection and deaths: 201,811 cases and 3134 deaths, respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 18,600 deaths and 569,289 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,487 deaths and 284,024 infected, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 579,272 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 9589 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 4369 deaths and 278,543 infections, and Algeria, with 4063 deaths and 162,155 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1282 deaths and 110,288 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 984 deaths associated with the disease and 41,780 accumulated infections.

Cape Verde registers 298 deaths associated with the disease and 33,577 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8863 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers 74 deaths and 4212 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2413 infections.
