Josina Machel Hospital successfully removes complex tumors

The Josina Machel hospital has a specialized service for the removal of highly complex tumors. This new service operates with a medical team that has already been able to successfully perform four tumor removal surgeries.

One of these success cases is that of Avelino António, who had a tumor in his jaw.

At the age of 11, Avelino saw his life change, "with the growth of a tumor in his jaw that, slowly, progressively and worryingly, increased in size until it reached five kilos, leaving him with the rest deformed".

According to a note published on the presidency's website, the young man, who is currently 27 years old and lives in the province of Uige, had to leave school, where he was attending the 5th grade and suffered bullying.

After 16 years, Avelino has hope again. On one of his consultation days, the young man was informed about a specialized service at Josina Machel hospital to remove complex tumors.

According to the statement, the service concerns a "new area for maxillofacial surgeries, a dental specialty that treats diseases of the oral cavity, face and neck."

Working with a medical team, this service has already successfully performed four surgeries to remove tumors. In the specific case of Avelino António, several specialists from the hospital unit, including those from the new service, "came together to remove the tumor".

After the surgery, it was "possible to see a new image" of Avelino. Quoted in the statement, the young man thanked and said he was very happy.

"God operated and I am already recovered, I am happy," Avelino António said.

According to the statement, the surgery took about four hours. "We performed the surgery and thank God it was a success," indicated the surgeon and head of maxillofacial services at Josina Machel hospital, Agnelo Lucamba.

There are other Angolans who live the same reality of Avelino and the doctor assures that his team is ready to accept all challenges.

"We want to achieve a greater dimension in terms of surgery. Today we already perform surgeries that were once only performed outside the country. But thanks to God we are already able to give more privileges to our brothers, being able to perform this type of surgery here in Angola", he said.

According to Carlos Zeca, general director of the hospital, the opening of this new service is a result of "the Executive's bet in training these professionals, most of them young Angolans, to respond to the country's high complexity health problems".

He added that the teams are trained in that hospital: "Many of them did their medical training in this hospital, did their specialty here and their doctorate outside the country, with the Government's help, and are responding with what they benefited from during their training," he emphasized.

The general director of the unit also left assurances that the hospital has sufficient human resources to respond to the concerns of patients who have problems related to the maxillofacial area. However, he says that it is still "necessary to bet more on the services, so that more surgeries are done and more health problems are solved.

Agnelo Lucamba made it known that it is necessary to reinforce the technological equipment, so that a service with higher quality is provided.

Until the operation, the patient is diagnosed in an external consultation. "Subsequently, the hospital does all the follow-up, at no cost, until his total recovery," the note adds.
