Taxi drivers announce service shutdown as of next Monday

Taxi drivers will suspend their services in seven provinces of the country, starting next Monday, to protest against the "violation of their rights and discrimination" in compliance with the decree on the situation of public calamity.

:

In a statement made public in Luanda, the Associação Nova Aliança dos Taxi Drivers of Angola (ANATA), the Association of Taxi Drivers of Angola (ATA) and the Association of Taxi Drivers of Luanda (ATL) announce the silent withdrawal of their vehicles from the lane to depart. this Thursday.

The decision to completely stop taxi services, approved on Wednesday after a meeting of association leaders, will cover the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huíla, Cuanza Sul, Uíge, Bengo and Lunda Norte.

According to a note from the ANATA communication department, the "violation of economic and social rights" of taxi drivers and "discrimination" between taxis and buses with regard to compliance with the presidential decree on the situation of public calamity are the reasons for the stoppage.

ANATA, ATA and ATL say there is "greater inspection" of taxis in relation to the capacity established by the authorities to contain the spread of covid-19 (50 percent), to the detriment of buses that will be "carrying 100 percent of the passengers".

Taxi drivers also complain about the "non-materialization so far", the professionalization of their activity and professional portfolio, "exclusion from public policies" and the poor condition of the roads.
