Covid-19: Africa is China's biggest recipient of vaccine donations

Africa is the region that has benefited the most from Chinese donations of vaccines against covid-19, but remains in last place among the regions that use inoculations developed by pharmaceutical companies in the Asian country, according to a consultant.

:

According to data from Bridge Consulting, which is based in Beijing, China has supplied vaccines to a total of 95 countries, spread over four regions.

Asia-Pacific received the highest number of Chinese vaccines, making up more than half of the doses delivered by China. Latin America and Europe appear in second and third place, respectively.

Africa comes in last, but, in contrast to other regions, the number of vaccines donated by China to Africa exceeds the number of doses sold.

Altogether, 33 African countries received vaccines donated or sold by China, including Angola and Mozambique, according to the same source.
China has already delivered a total of 20 million doses to Africa, out of the 44 million promised.

As part of South-South Cooperation, China pledged last February to provide vaccines against covid-19 to the African continent.
In addition to bilateral agreements with African countries, China has also delivered vaccines to Africa through the Covax initiative, promoted by the World Health Organization.

Brazil is the biggest buyer of Chinese vaccines in Latin America, according to data distributed by Bridge Consulting.

In total, Brasília acquired 100 million doses of the vaccine developed by the pharmaceutical company Sinovac, which carried out Phase 3 tests in the country.

The results of the tests, released by the Instituto Butantan, based in São Paulo, revealed that the Sinovac vaccine is 50.7 percent effective in preventing symptomatic infections and 83.7 percent in preventing mild cases that need treatment , which has generated debates about the use of the vaccine.

Brazil is also manufacturing Sinovac vaccines locally using active ingredients shipped from China.

The distribution of vaccines against covid-19 has taken on a special dimension at a time when China and several western countries struggle for influence in different parts of the world.

The group of countries that make up the G7 adopted, this Sunday, a plan to give more than one billion doses of vaccines against covid-19 by the end of 2022, with the aim of eradicating the pandemic worldwide.

The United States announced in recent days the donation of 500 million doses of Pfizer vaccine by 92 developing countries, 200 million of which by the end of the year, and the United Kingdom 100 million excess vaccines, of which 30 million by the end of the year. end of 2021.
