Covid-19: Angola registers eight new cases and climbs total infected to 267

The Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, announced this Sunday eight new cases of covid-19 in the country, a total of 267, one of which resulted in death, bringing the deaths to eleven.

:

Of the eight infected, aged between 3 and 61 years, six are female and two male, six cases of local transmission, related to the Endiama clinic in Luanda, and two without epidemiological link, he said.

Franco Mufinda, who made a daily assessment of the epidemiological situation, said the death was related to a 24-year-old girl with neurological myasthenia gravis and who had a respiratory condition probably worsened by covid-19.

The case was detected in the screening for acute and severe respiratory diseases that is being done in the sentinel centres, he added.

Six patients are in critical condition in intensive care at the follow-up centres.

With the new diagnoses of covid-19 the number of cases without epidemiological link is rising to 33, which are being investigated by the health authorities who have not yet declared Community transmission in the country.

Angola currently has 267 infected, of whom 11 died, 93 recovered, ten more than on Saturday and 163 active.

So far 24,603 samples have been received, of which 267 have been positive, 18,617 negative and the rest are being processed in laboratories.

Over 1000 people are in institutional quarantine.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 498,000 lives and infected more than 10 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

In Africa, there are 9484 confirmed deaths in more than 371,000 people infected in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics from that continent.
