Angola has new center for treatment of new coronavirus pandemic

Angola won this Saturday a new specialized unit to fight covid-19, an investment of the state oil company Sonangol, of three billion kwanzas, located in Viana, on the outskirts of Luanda.

The presentation of the infrastructure, an extension of the Sunflower Clinic, with capacity for 91 beds, 30 of which for critically ill patients, was attended by the President, João Lourenço.

At the end of the visit, the Head of State considered the unit erected in 27 days "very well equipped", both in means and professionals, in an area of 3600 square meters of a former Sonangol logistic centre, composed of 32 naves, three of which were adapted to house the hospital unit.

In his speech, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino de Azevedo, said that that health unit is equipped with the means to contribute to the increase of the response capacity to the covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Diamantino de Azevedo said Sonangol has worked in partnership with the country's health authorities through the Sunflower Clinic, which has resized its services to respond to treatment of patients with covid-19, turning its clinic II into a medical center for pandemic screening and treatment.

The facilities, in addition to the hospitalization capacity, have a laboratory service, imaging and other clinical services provided by technical staff.

The Governor pointed out that in cooperation with the health authorities, the oil company operated and made available the Hotel Suite Maianga, which has 50 suites, to house the medical teams and other health professionals involved in combating the pandemic.

"In the same vein, Sonangol has supported the pandemic contingency plan through other actions, such as the supply of fuel to the governments of the country's 18 provinces and to the Ministry of Energy and Water, to ensure the supply of free water by tanker trucks to the sensitive area, such as hospitals, morgues, markets, prisons, among others," he said.

For the future, the minister stressed, the permanent use of the undertaking for the treatment of patients living in its vicinity is being considered.

At the beginning of last week, the President inaugurated a campaign hospital, also located in Viana, of the Special Economic Zone, to attend cases of covid-19, with capacity for 1200 beds, equipped with a ventilation system and care, in a first phase, of 600 patients, adapted to attend the pandemic.

At the time, João Lourenço announced that the country will have two other campaign hospitals, to be set up in the provinces of Cabinda and Lunda Norte, with the perspective of creating more campaign hospitals to stop the possibility of transmitting the disease from the borders.
