Covid-19: death rate in Africa rises to 4756 in almost 170,000 cases

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 has risen in the last 24 hours to 4756, plus 155, in almost 170,000 cases, in the 54 countries, according to pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of deaths rose from 4601 to 4756 (+155), while the number of infected rose from 162,673 to 169,836 (+7163).

The same data indicate that the number of patients recovered is 74,732, 4257 more than the previous day.

The region of the continent most affected by the new coronavirus is still North Africa, with 2108 deaths in 49,668 cases.

Southern Africa is the second region with the most cases (43,318) and with 873 deaths, most of which are concentrated in South Africa, the country with the highest number of cases on the continent, having exceeded 40,000 (40,792) this Friday, and the second with the most deaths (848).

West Africa registers 772 deaths and 38,819 infections, East Africa has 586 deaths and has passed this Friday the 20,000 cases (20,024), while in Central Africa there are 417 deaths in 18,007 infected.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (1126) and has 29,767 infections, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 681 deaths and 9831 infected.

Morocco has 208 fatalities and 8003 cases, Nigeria has 323 deaths and 11,516 infections, while Ghana has 38 deaths and 8885 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections, with 1339 cases, registering eight deaths.

Cape Verde has 502 infections and five deaths and Sao Tome and Principe has 499 cases and 12 deaths.

Mozambique has 352 infected patients and two deaths and Angola has 86 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 1306 cases and 12 deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

On a global level, according to an AFP news agency report, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 387,000 lives and infected more than 6.5 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 2.8 million patients have been considered cured.
