Initiative for Transparency in Industry assesses entry of Angola on 17 June

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) will analyze Angola's candidacy at the meeting on 16 and 17 June, in what could be a "historic moment", said the executive director of this non-governmental organization.

:

"This candidacy is a historic moment; Angola is the second largest producer of oil and gas in Africa and the Angolan economy is severely dependent on the sector's revenues", said Mark Robinson in the note consulted today by Lusa, which discloses the date of 16 and 17 as the final assessment of the EITI administration upon entry into Angola.

"Dialogue between different stakeholders and transparency through membership of the EITI can help Angola deal with governance challenges in its extractive sectors, for the benefit of Angolan citizens", added the official.

The documents with Angola's candidacy were presented at the beginning of April, when the Minister of Natural Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, said: "The entry of the candidacy is the result of an enormous effort by the Government, civil society and industry".

Joining the EITI "will promote the transparency and governance of Angola's mineral, oil and gas wealth, deal with the risks of corruption and contribute to the promotion of investment", then added the minister.

The Angolan official considered that the EITI aims to improve transparency, through extractive industries, because through it instruments are created that facilitate the disclosure by the industry of tax payments and government institutions, indicating the amounts received from these industries.

"We believe that through the EITI it is important to promote better governance in countries rich in oil, gas and mineral resources, reducing the risk of misappropriation or misappropriation of funds generated by the development of a country's extractive industries", said the official.

The EITI is an organization based in Oslo, Norway, which guarantees a set of information regarding the process of extraction, distribution and commercialization of natural resources, through the voluntary adhesion of the countries, contributing to the transparency and dissemination of information.

The opacity in the oil industry in Angola was precisely one of the reasons for the creation of the EITI 20 years ago, the organization's president told Lusa in February.

The EITI, which has 52 countries, 27 of which are in Africa, with Angola being the 28th, guarantees a set of information regarding the process of extraction, distribution and commercialization of natural resources, through the voluntary adhesion of the countries.

"Adherence to the IETI principles requires disclosure of the holders of extractive companies, including politically exposed persons, and also requires the transparent management of public companies and revenues from this industry", the president concluded.
