Covid-19: Africa's death toll rises in more than 95,000 cases

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa rose to 2997 on Wednesday, with more than 95,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 2912 to 2997, while those infected with the covid-19 virus have gone from 91,598 to 95,201.

The total number of recovered patients increased from 35,808 to 38,075.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1496 deaths, having exceeded 30 thousand infected (30,149) with covid-19.

West Africa records 554 deaths and there are 26,154 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 359 deaths and 19,432 cases, almost all concentrated in a single country, South Africa, which exceeded 18,000 infected (18,003).

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (680) and has 14,229 cases, followed by Algeria, with 568 dead and 7542 infected.

South Africa is the third with more deaths (339), continuing to be the country in the continent with the most cases of covid-19, with 18,003 infected.

Morocco totals 194 fatalities and 7133 cases, Nigeria has 200 deaths and 6677 cases, while Ghana has 31 deaths and 6269 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections, with 1089 cases, and records six deaths.

Cape Verde has 349 infections and three deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe has 258 cases and 11 deaths.

Mozambique has 156 infected patients and Angola has 58 confirmed cases of covid-19 and three died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 719 positive cases of infection and seven deaths, according to Africa CDC.

More than five million cases of contagion due to the new coronavirus have been officially declared worldwide, 70 percent of which correspond to Europe and the United States, according to a count by the agency France Presse, until 7:30 am this Thursday.
