Covid-19: Africa averages over 2100 infections per day

Last week, the African continent recorded an average of more than 2100 new cases of covid-19 per day, 1.5 times more than in the previous week, the Africa CDC said this Thursday.

:

The data was advanced by the director of the African Union Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC), John Nkengasong, during the weekly press conference from the organization's headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

"In the week between April 30 and May 6, 14,757 new cases of covid-19 were reported compared to the 10,500 registered in the previous week. We had 1.5 times more cases this week, with an average of 2108 per day," he said. .

The Africa CDC official pointed out the fact that the continent has surpassed the barrier of 50 thousand cases of infection with the new coronavirus and the two thousand deaths (2012), adding that the mortality rate in the continent stands at 3.9 percent.

"The number of deaths includes medical personnel, which is unfortunate. We have to protect the people who protect us, but unfortunately we are seeing an increasing trend of deaths among health professionals," he said.

On the other hand, John Nkengasong pointed out, more than 17,500 patients were reported to have recovered.

"We have to celebrate any small victory," he said.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 1959 to 2012, while infections have increased from 49,352 to 51,698.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 16,315 to 17,590.

Although, in the global African context, countries do not register many accumulated cases, the Africa CDC director warned of the need to "not be complacent" with the idea that a country has few cases.

"This is a very dangerous virus and has an enormous capacity to spread quickly," he said, adding that countries cannot let their guard down because they have a small number and cases.

"The situation can change at any time and we have seen very rapid changes. Therefore, it is necessary to intensify the monitoring, testing and treatment of people," he said.

"Battles will be fought locally in each member country, but the victory must be continental because covid-19 infections in one African country represent infections in all African countries," he said.
