Death toll in Africa by covid-19 exceeds two thousand and cases are over 51 thousand

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa exceeded two thousand on Thursday, with more than 51 thousand cases of the disease registered in 53 countries, according to the latest statistics on the pandemic in that continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the past 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 1959 to 2012, while infections have increased from 49,352 to 51,698.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 16,315 to 17,590.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1,175 dead and 19,090 registered cases.

In West Africa, there are 330 deaths and 14,514 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 169 deaths in 8,304 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 53 of Africa's 55 countries and territories, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria - concentrating about half of the infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt has 469 deaths and 7588 infected, South Africa counts 153 deaths and 7808 infected patients, while Morocco has a total of 183 fatalities and 5408 cases and Nigeria has exceeded one hundred deaths (103) and has 3145 infected.

The highest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria (476), in 4997 infected patients.

Only Lesotho and the Saharawi Republic continue to not report cases of covid-19.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 475 cases, including the prime minister in power and three more members of his government, and two killed.

São Tomé and Príncipe has 200 cases and four deaths and Cape Verde has 191 infections and two deaths.

Mozambique has 81 infected patients and Angola has 36 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 439 positive cases of infection and four deaths, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 260,000 deaths and infected about 3.7 million people in 195 countries and territories.

More than 1.1 million patients were considered cured.
