Covid-19: More than 3,700 people with extinct and suspended jobs

At least 3,728 people have seen their jobs extinguished and their employment contracts suspended in the last two months because of "serious cash flow problems", aggravated by covid-19, said this Friday official source.

The construction, oil, industry and service sectors are most affected.

The "worrying" situation was presented by the Minister of Public Administration, Labour and Social Security, Teresa Rodrigues Dias, at the opening of a consultation meeting with employers that took place in Luanda.

Alluding to statistical data from the Inspectorate-General of Labour for the last two months, a period in which the country is in a state of emergency to contain the spread of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, the governor considered that the number of people affected "is considerable".

The "real reasons" for the employers' measures or decisions were the basic basis of the meeting, which also aimed at seeking solutions to curb redundancies in this phase of the emergency.

According to the government, the pandemic "has regrettably reflected negatively on the vitality of businesses, on the implementation of certain policies, such as the promotion of employment".

"This situation motivated the Angolan executive to approve, through presidential decree no. 98/20, of 9 April, the immediate measures to alleviate the economic and financial effects caused by covid-19," she said.

The "immediate measures" adopted by the government in response to the effects of the pandemic on businesses and families are determined on a website of the Ministry of Economy and Planning (www.alivioeconomico.org).

To "ensure financial support for the minimum maintenance" of activity levels of micro, small and medium enterprises in the productive sector, the Government provides around 488 billion kwanzas.

This Friday Teresa Rodrigues Dias stressed that the measures described in the presidential decree "unequivocally demonstrate the great concern of the holder of executive power, towards companies operating in Angola.

"For the guarantee of economic and financial stability, as well as the safeguarding of legal and labour relations of our fellow citizens who, in their work, guarantee the sustainability of their families," she said.

The auscultation meeting directed by the Ministry of Public Administration, Labour and Social Security in partnership with other ministerial departments was an orientation of the Minister of State for Economic Coordination.
