On the podium, according to Angop, there are also Burundi (a bronze medal) and Paraguay (a bronze medal) in second and third place, respectively.

The Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion, in Luanda, is the stage for the competition that started this Thursday and will run until next Sunday (7th April). There are 21 participating countries (such as Botswana, Cameroon, Burundi, Cape Verde, among others) in the competition that, for the second time, Angola hosts, after having debuted as host last year.

According to Josemar Frederico, vice-president of the Angola Judo Federation, the aim to be achieved is to gain the highest number of points for athletes who wish to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games, taking place in September this year.

The official, cited by Angop, made it known that 339 athletes will be present at the open, of which 100 are Angolans, and added that six judges and six timekeepers will also be representing the country's colors.

Among the Angolan athletes who could qualify for this year's Olympic Games are António Candeeiro, Adriano Tchissende, Piter Silva, Andreza António, Jeovana Freire, Leonardo Barros, Maria Niagi and Aisha Maurício.

Also competing in the event, which precedes the African Championship (taking place in Egypt between 23 and 26 April), is national judoka Leonardo Barros, who wants to win a gold medal in the open.

According to Angop, the judoka recently won gold at the African Games in Accra and wants to do the same in the country's capital, aiming to secure passage to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
