Unicef finances with one million dollars a sanitation pilot project in Viana

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) will finance, with one million dollars, a pilot project for simplified condominium sanitation, which will start in the coming days in the municipality of Viana, in Luanda. The agreement aimed at implementing this initiative was signed this Monday, between Unicef and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment.

:

The initiative will last one year and will be divided into four stages, highlighting actions to train the community on selective waste collection and maintenance of sanitation, writes Angop.

The execution of the project – valued at one million dollars and financed by Unicef – aims to reduce infant mortality rates, improve urban resilience in Viana, the provision of basic services as well as the insertion of an integrated recycling idea for a circular economy.

According to Angop, the project is the result of an action by Brazil, South Africa and India.

Cited by Angop, Paula Francisco Coelho, Secretary of State for the Environment, said that the project is an initiative of the sector that is part of the National Sanitation Strategy, because of the obstacles regarding the separation of garbage, environmental education, among others.

"Each residence will be able to have a bucket with an integrated management system to be able to separate the waste, in order to evaluate the quality, ton and manage the fecal sludge", she explained.

She also referred that the technical teams of the ministry, Unicef and the government of Luanda are already created to show the initiative to the beneficiaries, adding that there is also a manual for separating waste and the National Sanitation Strategy plan.

Ivan Yerovi, UNICEF representative in Angola, also quoted by Angop, said that "the project began to be prepared in 2019 and will contribute to the population's knowledge about sanitation, with the participation in meetings and training meetings".
