Covid-19: Africa with 551 more dead and 20,680 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 551 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 117,057 since the start of the pandemic, and 20,680 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,396,556 and the number recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 15,682, to a total of 3,943,954 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,937,121 infected and 61,088 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,562,931 cases and 53,571 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,305,516 infected and 37,584 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 560,770 infections and 10,180 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 447,640 and that of deaths is 5882. Central Africa accounts for 145,509 cases of infection and 2323 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 12,611 deaths and 213,798 infected, following Tunisia, with 9553 deaths and 279,376 cases of infection. Morocco records 504,260 cases of infection and 8927 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Algeria, with 3144 dead and 119,050 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3285 fatalities and 236,554 infections.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 794 deaths and 69,002 cases, followed by Angola (557 deaths and 23,951 cases of infection), Cape Verde (188 deaths and 19,780 cases), Equatorial Guinea (106 deaths and 7259 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3706 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2271 cases).
