NGO: new Environment Minister is “a bet that is justified”

The Angolan Ecological Youth (JEA) praised the choice of biologist Adjany Costa to protect the Environment portfolio in the Government, despite the "great challenge" that she will have in a super ministry that also brings together Tourism and Culture.

:

Speaking to Lusa, the head of the JEA exchange department, Bartolomeu Milton, stressed that the biologist "turned her vocation into a passion" and always showed great interest in environmental issues, having even belonged to the organization itself and participated in the Environment Olympics , a project that JEA has been carrying out since 1996.

A passion that, combined with his career, allows the head of JEA to affirm that Adjany Costa "is a bet that is justified in view of the contribution he has made" to the environment.

The biologist and explorer was one of the winners, in 2019, of the Young Champions of the Earth award, given by the United Nations to environmentalists between 18 and 30 years of age, for her commitment to protecting the environment.

He also participated in a scientific expedition along the Okavango basin, exploring, for four months, a route of about 2500 kilometers that passed through Angola and Namibia to Botswana, which resulted in the documentary "Into the Okavango", by the National filmmaker. Geographic Society Neil Gelinas.

The JEA official stressed, on the other hand, that the new ruler will need "time and opportunity to apply the big ideas that she has and the necessary reforms", especially considering the "inexperience in the political world". "Let's wait and see and we will support in whatever is necessary ", he guaranteed.

As for the combination of several areas, he considered that Tourism can be considered as "the other side of the same coin", while Culture is a totally different sector.

"It will end up having a bigger challenge than its predecessors", noted Bartolomeu Milton, believing that Adjany Costa "will assert his will. Knowledge and resourcefulness" to take the task to a successful conclusion.

"It is important that you adopt a governance strategy and political vision to leverage a lot of what needs to be done", underlined the JEA leader.

Among the priorities, he highlighted the formulation of appropriate policies for the preservation of ecosystems, the adoption of clean technologies and the improvement of the management of the negative impacts of public works projects and the exploitation of natural resources.
