"Angola defends the 'One China' principle and Taiwan as an integral part of Chinese territory," said the head of state, during a meeting with Xi, at the Great Palace of the People, next to Tiananmen Square, in the center of Beijing.

The 'One China' principle is seen by Beijing as a guarantee that Taiwan is part of its territory.

In recent years, China has launched a campaign to isolate the island internationally, trying to bring Taipei's diplomatic allies over to its side and blocking the territory's participation in international organizations.

Beijing also began sending ships and warplanes almost daily near Taiwan.

João Lourenço defended a peaceful solution to the Taiwan issue, "like what happened with Hong Kong and Macau".

Like the former British colony Hong Kong in 1997, Macau's administration passed from Portugal to China in 1999, thanks to an agreement between the two countries.

"There is no reason to think differently after these two cases of great success in Chinese diplomacy", observed João Lourenço.

Taiwan currently maintains diplomatic relations with 14 countries and, although in recent years it has lost allies, Taipei has intensified official exchanges with countries such as Lithuania and Slovakia, which do not formally recognize Taiwan as a country, through the opening of agencies of trade and investment.

China and Taiwan have lived as two autonomous territories since 1949, when the former Chinese nationalist government took refuge on the island, following its defeat in the civil war against the communists.

However, Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory, not a sovereign political entity, and threatens to use force if the island declares independence.
