Ukraine: Angola is preparing to evacuate fleeing Angolans

The Government announced this Wednesday that it was preparing the withdrawal of its citizens fleeing the war in Ukraine, being “in close liaison” with its diplomatic representations in Russia, Poland, Serbia and Hungary.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is "working towards the implementation of the Evacuation Contingency Plan in order to ensure proper consular protection for Angolan citizens who are held in conflict areas in Ukraine".

The ministry adds that it is "in close liaison with the diplomatic representations of the Republic of Angola in the Russian Federation, Poland, Serbia and Hungary" so that they can provide "all the indispensable support in this difficult time".

The executive asks all Angolan citizens to collaborate with the Angolan institutions accredited in these countries and expresses "its appreciation" for the collaboration of the leaders of the Angolan communities in the affected areas, urging them to continue to "work for the massive mobilization of all national citizens".

A group of 168 Angolans residing in Ukraine arrived in Poland on Sunday, the Jornal de Angola reported.

The Embassy of Angola in Poland has been carrying out since Saturday, for a period of seven days, the reception and removal of Angolan students "who so desire" at the border post of Korczowa-Krokowets, advising them to bring the respective documents of travel, according to a statement from the Angolan consulate in the United Kingdom.

African governments, from South Africa to the Democratic Republic of Congo, are trying to make it easier for their citizens to cross borders by sending diplomats into the field in the face of accusations of discriminatory treatment.

The African Union on Monday called it "shockingly racist" for African citizens to be barred from fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, calling on all countries to respect international law and support those fleeing war, regardless of race.

The Polish authorities have already assured that "all people receive equal treatment" at the border.

About 677,000 people have already fled Ukraine and the number of internally displaced people has reached one million people, according to the UN.

Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine early Thursday, with ground forces and bombing targets in several cities, which have killed more than 350 civilians, including children, according to Kiev.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the "special military operation" in Ukraine aims to demilitarize the neighboring country and that it was the only way for Russia to defend itself, with the Kremlin specifying that the offensive will last as long as necessary.

The attack was condemned by the international community at large and the European Union and the United States, among others, responded by sending weapons and ammunition to Ukraine and strengthening sanctions to further isolate Moscow.
