This field trip allowed the head of state to monitor the progress of the project, which began construction last year.

"The visit allowed us to witness the progress of this important infrastructure, which is in a crucial phase of construction," the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation reported in a statement that VerAngola had access to.

Accompanied by his aides, the head of state visited several areas of the infrastructure and was updated on the project's progress.

Combining care and education, the future hospital will help strengthen the national healthcare system.

"The project represents a significant step forward in strengthening the national healthcare network and supporting medical training in Angola," the ministry noted.

With a capacity for 144 beds, the hospital covers a total area of approximately 10 hectares.

"With a total area of approximately 10 hectares, the University Hospital will feature modern infrastructure, designed to provide excellent healthcare, with a capacity for 144 beds," the statement reads, adding that "the first phase includes a built-up area of 18,100 square meters, intended for the provision of surgical and medical services, both outpatient and inpatient, including an isolation area and an intensive care unit."

According to the ministry, this hospital will be "an essential milestone in strengthening the healthcare system, contributing to improving the quality of medical care in Angola. Simultaneously, it will play a decisive role in the practical training of students at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Health Sciences of Agostinho Neto University, promoting the qualifications of the country's future healthcare professionals."

Construction on this new hospital began in November 2024 and, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic, that VerAngola had access to, is expected to be completed next year.

Valued at 99 million dollars, the contract for the construction of the future hospital was awarded to the Swiss company Promed International AG – a subsidiary of Mitrelli.

Featuring ten clinical units, the hospital – which is being built on a 40,000-square-meter area and is part of the Vila Rubra development plan, located in the new university campus of Camama – will include services such as an outpatient emergency department, a non-invasive diagnostic department, wards, imaging and diagnostic units, an intensive care unit, and a clinical laboratory, reports Angop.

An endoscopy room, pharmacy, morgue, laundry, hospital waste management area, cafeteria, training center, separate elevators for the public, patients, and on-call staff, among other facilities, are also part of the hospital unit, which will feature cutting-edge technology, meeting international standards, focusing on clinical education, scientific research, and the provision of high-quality healthcare.

During the visit, Pedro Magalhães, dean of the UAN, highlighted the progress of the construction, indicating that physical and financial completion are at seven and 14 percent, respectively.

"We are hopeful that the project can be completed within the established timeframe. This is an essential facility, especially for the UAN, where medical and health sciences programs have faced interruptions due to the lack of adequate conditions for laboratory and clinical practice," he said, quoted by Angop.
