Government to withdraw Angolans residing in areas affected by the conflict in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) is working “hard” with its diplomatic representations in Russia and Poland to remove Angolans residing in areas of Ukraine affected by the conflict.

According to a note from the MIREX press office, the government of Luanda has been monitoring the situation of Angolans residing in that country, "in view of the escalation of tension that is taking place in this part of Eastern Europe" and will do everything to safeguard the lives of its citizens residing in Ukraine.

In addition, a group of 168 Angolans residing in Ukraine were expected to arrive this Sunday in Poland, where two other compatriots arrived on Saturday, having been welcomed by the Angolan Embassy in that country, reports Jornal de Angola.

According to the daily, which cites the person responsible for the Angolan community in Ukraine, Manuel de Assunção, the 168 Angolans will arrive in separate groups in an area of ​​the border with Poland, entering at once.

The Embassy of Angola in Poland has been carrying out since Saturday, for a period of seven days, the reception and removal of Angolan students "who so desire" at the border post of Korczowa-Krokowets, advising them to bring the respective documents of travel, according to a statement from the Angolan consulate in the United Kingdom.

Manuel de Assunção, the leader of the Angolan community in Ukraine, arrived on Saturday morning at the Polish border, with more than 30 Angolans, after an 18-hour train journey, on a journey of more than 800 kilometers from Dnipro, a city that it is close to Donetsk and Lugansk, occupied by Ukrainian separatists since 2014, reports Jornal de Angola.

The 29-year-old and architecture student in Ukraine, where he has lived for seven years, bought the 100 euros ticket, noting the price speculation, which previously ranged from 25 to 50 euros, at a time when "many people want leave Ukraine", seeking safety in Poland.

According to estimates, Poland will receive five million refugees, including Ukrainians and foreigners of various nationalities.

On Thursday, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine, with ground forces and bombing targets in several cities, which has already caused about 200 deaths, including civilians, and more than 1,100 wounded, in Ukrainian territory, according to Kiev. The UN reported nearly 370,000 displaced persons to Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the "special military operation" in Ukraine aims to demilitarize the neighboring country and that it was the only way for Russia to defend itself, with the Kremlin specifying that the offensive will last as long as necessary.

The attack was condemned by the international community in general and led to emergency meetings of several governments, including the Portuguese, and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the EU and the UN Security Council, with mass sanctions being approved against the Russia.
