"What we know is that solid waste is raw material to enhance certain industries," Francisco Lopes began by explaining, speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).
The hydraulic and sanitation engineer said that the country has already encountered "the interest of a number of countries" in acquiring Angola's garbage.
"These countries have already realized that our solid waste is rich. They have a lot of plastic, they have a lot of paper, they have food scraps, and all of this is material that can enhance their industries," he clarified.
He also admitted that this industry can generate several jobs. If the country outlines policies for "the use of these residues as raw material, according to the materials collected, we have industries for their use and we will have a number of individuals working in this direction," he stated.
Joana Lina, governor of Luanda, also speaking to RNA, said that the garbage problem is being solved and took the opportunity to apologize to the population.
"We are living a very difficult moment. I publicly ask the population for a sincere apology", she began by saying.
The governor also asked the population to try to collaborate more so that the problem can be overcome quickly. "When they put, for example, sticks or prune trees and put that inside the containers, we already know that when the compactors arrive to collect this garbage, they damage the equipment," making it difficult to collect the waste.
