Bloco Democrático argues that MPLA "must be opposition to cure itself of corruption

The Democratic Bloc (BD) party considered this Wednesday that the ruling MPLA "must do an opposition cure to clean up its own corruption," while UNITA pointed to the "unpopularity" of the MPLA's "comrades" as grounds for constitutional revision.

For the president of BD, Justino Pinto de Andrade, who advocates the "combination" of political forces and civil society to remove the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power since 1975), "the time has come for the MPLA to go to rest".

"The MPLA needs to go to rest, because over these years it has shown its inability to govern and, what's more, it has shown that it is the very center of corruption after all," the BD leader said this Wednesday during a press conference.

"Corruption is in the MPLA and, for this very reason, the MPLA has to step away from power, to cure itself of the opposition, to cleanse itself of the evil that it has within itself, that it produced during these years, which are the 'marimbondos' [allusion to wasps]," accused the also MP.

The leaders of BD, the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Adalberto Costa Júnior, and the coordinator of the political project of the Party of Rebirth Angola - Together for Angola - Serve Angola (PRA-JA Serve Angola), Abel Chivukuvuku, got together this Wednesday for a press conference in Luanda, addressing the President's intention to make a punctual constitutional revision.

João Lourenço announced last week a punctual revision of the Constitution, aiming, among others, at clarifying the mechanisms of political supervision, giving voting rights to foreign residents, and eliminating the principle of gradualism in municipalities.

The head of state stressed that the details of the proposals, their meaning, scope and rationale will be presented publicly.

"With this proposal for a punctual revision of the Constitution we intend to preserve the stability of its fundamental principles, adapt some of its norms to the current reality, keeping it adjusted to the political, social and economic context, clarify the mechanisms of political oversight and improve the relationship between the sovereign bodies, as well as correct some insufficiencies," he stressed.

The proposal for revision of 40 articles of the CRA has already been delivered to the National Assembly.

The president of UNITA said, on the occasion, that the initiative of constitutional revision, despite having obeyed the legal limits, appears in a moment of pre-campaign and, therefore, runs over ethical and universality aspects.

For Adalberto Costa Júnior, there was no blow to the opposition parties, with this initiative of the President, considering that "there was an act of opportunism in function of a moment of extraordinary personal unpopularity".

"The lack of any answers to combat the economic and social crisis, the country sees no light at the end of the tunnel in the fight against poverty, and is in one of the worst moments ever experienced in the socio-economic sphere," he said.

"And, therefore, there is nothing like trying to divert the attention of Angolans," he noted, also lamenting the moment and place in which the constitutional revision was announced (Council of Ministers).

The UNITA leader defended that the announcement of the CRA revision should have been preceded by a discussion with the civil society and the revision should be announced in the parliament.

Adalberto Costa Júnior also considered that "the proposed revision does not include issues related to the electoral system and other fundamental aspects of society such as the Land Law, a fundamental aspect that is questioned all the time.

"It is our reading that this initiative has as its fundamental objective to gain time to revert the negative picture that the figure of the President and the MPLA itself is in, with the purpose of postponing the elections. What we hear is the postponement to 2024 and I say to the Angolans that not even this brings us security," he concluded.
