Abel Chivukuvuku accuses MPLA of "tricks" and considers constitutional revision "cosmetic"

Politician Abel Chivukuvuku accused MPLA this Wednesday of being a "party of tricks and that has never won elections," considering that the proposed constitutional revision is "a mere cosmetic exercise" that "contains traps".

:

"It is our obligation and our duty to create the political and organizational conditions so that the MPLA can be defeated in the next elections. It is our role, but above all without illusions, because it is certain that tricks will be performed again, because it is a party of tricks. It is up to us, from our experience, not to allow that this is possible", said Abel Chivukuvuku.

Chivukuvuku recalled the experiences, which he considers "bitter", of the electoral processes of 1992, 2008, 2012, and 2017, and added: "We all know that in Angola the MPLA [Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, in power since 1975] has never won elections".

"That is why we have to be prepared for the 2022 elections," the coordinator of the political project of the Party of Rebirth Angola - Together for Angola (PRA-JA) Serving Angola said.

The politician was speaking in Luanda, during a joint press conference, promoted by PRA-JA Servir Angola, the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Democratic Bloc (BD), Angolan opposition.

For Abel Chivukuvuku, who has seen the Constitutional Court disapprove several times the legalization of his political project, Angola lives a "moment of extraordinary indigence.

"And it demands from all its children and actors a new posture, firmness, of principles, courage, but above all a lot of creativity so that we can break through the challenges of the future", he noted.

The President announced last week a punctual revision of the Constitution with the purpose, among others, of clarifying the mechanisms of political supervision, giving foreign residents the right to vote, and eliminating the principle of gradualism in the municipalities.

João Lourenço, who was speaking at the start of the work of the second ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, stressed that the details of the proposals, their meaning, scope and basis will be presented publicly.

"With this proposal for punctual revision of the Constitution, we intend to preserve the stability of its fundamental principles, adapt some of its norms to the current reality, keeping it adjusted to the political, social and economic context, clarify the mechanisms of political oversight and improve the relationship between the sovereign bodies, as well as correct some insufficiencies," he said.

The proposal for revision of 40 articles of the Constitution has already been delivered to the National Assembly.

According to Abel Chivukuvuku, the proposed revision of the Constitution "has absolutely nothing of checkmate" for the opposition, as it is proclaimed, because it is "a mere cosmetic and polishing exercise".

"Because they are either confirming what is already in the Constitution or restoring what already was and they had taken away. If we discuss gradualism today, it is out of the question and makes no sense, because they themselves invented the problem by establishing the principle of geographical gradualism," he said, blaming the ruling party.

Chivukuvuku referred that "if the Angolan Government and the party that sustains it had courage and patriotism" today "the State model would be discussed".

"We have a unitary State that is excessively centralized for a country as vast as ours and as diverse as ours. If they wanted to change, we should change the Angolan political system, which is a hyperbolic presidential system," he considered.

"If they had courage, patriotism, and willpower, what we would be discussing now is the electoral system, if there was courage we should now be discussing the nature of our legislative power," he added.

The leader of the PRA-JA Servir Angola also exhorted the citizens to "be alert", to what he considers the "MPLA's maneuvers", because one must think that "they are setting a trap somewhere".

"The first trap we should avoid, don't lead us to a substantive discussion of the revision of the Constitution that allows them to postpone elections," he finished.
