"The constitutional revision, which will probably take months to be approved, will certainly ensure that the municipal elections are not held this year and should be done together with the 2022 legislative elections or, even more likely, in 2023," the consultants write in an analysis note on the main economic and political developments in sub-Saharan Africa.
"Holding elections later, when the economic and health crises have already passed, will probably benefit President João Lourenço and the ruling party," the analysts add in the commentary sent to investors, to which Lusa had access.
Last week, the President announced a one-off revision of the Constitution with the aim, among others, of clarifying political oversight mechanisms, giving foreign residents the right to vote and eliminating the principle of gradualism in municipalities, prompting several criticisms from opponents.
