Africa with 268 more dead and 11,026 infected with covid-19 in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 268 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 108,659 since the start of the pandemic, and 11,026 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 4,062,388 and that of recovered in the last 24 hours is 7968, for one total of 3,649,317 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,878,539 infected and 58,551 killed by contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,532,497 cases and 51,634 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,207,701 infected and 34,563 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 447,193 infections and 8,203 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 415,492 and that of deaths is 5441. Central Africa has 113,463 cases and 1901 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 11,431 deaths and 192,840 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8745 deaths and 490,088 cases.

Among the countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 8463 deaths and 243,439 cases, Algeria, with 3050 deaths and 115,596 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2592 fatalities and 179,812 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 733 deaths and 65,881 cases, followed by Angola (522 deaths and 21,489 cases of infection), Cape Verde (158 deaths and 16,250 cases), Equatorial Guinea (100 deaths and 6603 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (54 dead and 3488 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (33 killed and 2107 cases).
