Luanda Surface Metro: yes or no? Experts highlight benefits

The arrival of the Surface Metro in Luanda will bring some benefits to the country. Experts believe that this new transport service will help improve mobility and contribute to job creation, while reducing the number of cars circulating daily in the capital, thus becoming a driver for the growth of the national economy.

The decrease in car circulation in the city will be one of the changes that the country will notice more quickly. In a statement to Angop, Abílio Cabeto, a civil engineer, said that people will stop riding in his car, opting to travel by subway.

Because it is a comfortable, fast transport and the value of the tickets will be reduced the demand will be great, he said. The specialist also said that the fact that people do not need to wake up too early to take that transport and the fact that they do not run the risk of being robbed, will be decisive factors when it comes to joining the subway.

"In general, there may be a less stressful life," he added.

Angelino Quissonde, an engineer, also shares the same opinion as Abílio Cabeto. To Angop, the specialist said that the reduced cost of tickets will be an added value for the population.

He also approached the environment: since the number of vehicles in the city will decrease, the level of pollution will also decrease.

For the engineer, the subway will allow Angolans to better plan their lives, making people happier and more motivated to get to work. This is because having to wake up very early and face traffic will no longer be a reality.

Eutymio, an economist, said that the metro will help the economy to grow, since the movement of people and goods will be easier, thus allowing business transactions to increase.

Displacements to implement the metro

However, it's not all good news. Angelino Quissonde told Angop that the construction of the metro will bring some constraints to the city: demolitions and the mobilization of part of the population to other areas of the city will be some of the realities that could happen with the installation of the metro.

"Naturally, today, it is not possible to implement a project of this size in Luanda without incurring homelessness," economist Estêvão Eutímio told the agency. In the eyes of the economist, the city does not have the space to build an infrastructure such as the one the metro requires.

However, the experts left the caveat that the relocation of families should be implemented in the project's investment plan, thus ensuring the well-being of all.
