German Siemens starts construction of Luanda Surface Metro later this year

Construction of the Luanda Surface Metro will start in 2020. The contract will be carried out by the German company Siemens Mobility, as part of the signing of a public-private partnership.

:

Last Friday, as part of Angela Merkel's visit to Angola, Transport Minister Ricardo D'Abreu and Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter signed an agreement establishing a public-private partnership for the construction of the Luanda Surface Metro.

According to the minister, the work is expected to cost around three billion dollars and the "intention is that the project starts as soon as possible, this year, to make life easier for citizens".

The agreement, which establishes a public-private partnership, foresees that the state will own about 30 percent of the project. The remaining 70 per cent will be handed over to private individuals.

The metro will extend 149 kilometres, linking several points in the city: from the Port of Luanda to Cacuaco, from Avenida Fidel Castro Ruz to Benfica, from the Port of Luanda to Largo da Independência and the City of Kilamba to the 1st of May.
