TAAG cabin navigators in protest march on Saturday

The Provincial Union of Cabin Navigators (SINPROPNC), of the national airline TAAG will hold a protest march on Saturday against the “mismanagement” of the company.

The union's executive secretary, Ondina Costa told Lusa that the rally will start at 9:30 am at 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, departing from there towards Avenida Ho Chi Minh, Largo das Heroínas, Sagrada Familia, until ending at Rua da Missão, next to the headquarters of TAAG.

The intention was communicated to the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL) last Friday without receiving any response to date, she added.

In the document sent to GPL, SINPROPNC explains that the "peaceful demonstration" aims to appeal to TAAG's administration to resolve disputes, namely non-payment of the winter subsidy and allowances; non-compliance with the collective agreement; arbitrary decision-making.

Adherence to the march will not affect flights, as "this is not a strike", clarified the union leader, estimating a participation of around 250 people.

In mid-February, in a statement addressed to its members, SINPROPNC already admitted the possibility of advancing to the protest that will have as slogans: "give back our TAAG", "down with bad management" and "out with HiFly".

And he pointed out several problems, stressing that the claims presented to the company's management, currently headed by the executive chairman, the Spaniard Eduardo Soria, have not been resolved.

"The truth is that things continue to go from bad to worse," the document reads.

At issue is the payment of daily allowances, discrimination in terms of payments, card management and the rental contract with HiFly.

"We must not forget: TAAG is ours, it is an Angolan company and must serve Angola and the Angolans, and not foreign companies as is happening with HiFly (which, as a result of the agreement with TAAG, does not stop recruiting crew) and FLY.AO, which hired a company from Mongolia and which was subcontracted by TAAG, when we have local planes and crews", contests the union.

Last year, Linhas Aéreas de Angola (TAAG) contracted an Airbus A330 aircraft from the Portuguese airline HiFly for the Luanda-Lisbon-Luanda connection, under a 'wet lease' regime, a type of contract that guarantees, in addition to the aircraft, the availability of the complete crew, maintenance and insurance of the device.

"This decision coincides precisely with the ongoing maintenance work that TAAG is carrying out on part of its international fleet, respectively the Boeing 777-300ER model", according to a note released at the time by the company.

TAAG concluded, at the end of last year, agreements with all the unions – the Provincial Union of Cabin Navigators (SINPROPNC), the Airline Pilots Union (SPLA) and the Union Bureau – which include the operationalization and implementation phase of the applicable remuneration components, which were not disclosed.

According to the airline, the negotiations that arose after a period of strike that took place in October 2022, were characterized by dialogue and concertation, with the parties assuming the commitment to maintain regular meetings and joint participation in work teams for solutions in the long term, such as the ongoing reform process at the carrier that is undergoing privatization.
