Activist questions fight against corruption and probity of PGR

The activist and investigator Nuno Alvaro Dala questioned the fight against corruption in Angola and the probity of the Attorney General's Office (PGR), denouncing the involvement of magistrates in "mafia schemes" and extortion.

During a presentation of his "Investigation Project Against Corruption of Public Officials (PICC-TCP)" in Luanda, the activist said he is currently investigating 51 cases involving holders of public office.

"These 50 cases that we are investigating illustrate that we do not have the ideal struggle", underlining that the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has been carrying out a "useful regeneration", sacrificing some people to maintain the leadership of the destinies of the country that has governed for almost 40 years.

"Unfortunately [the struggle] is selective and to the measure of hegemonic interests, there are figures who are not being touched," he said in a press conference, quoting Manuel Vicente, former vice-president and former president of Sonangol.

The activist pointed that there is no fight against corruption that "gives confidence that the main responsible parties in the country's tragedy will be held accountable" and is focused on a "proper agenda for the MPLA to gain legitimacy" to remain in power.

"We do not have a struggle that corresponds to the rights of citizens, but to a hegemonic group that is concerned about its self-preservation" he criticized, reinforcing: "which MPLA figures are not directly or indirectly involved, which are those who have achieved these assets with honest work?"

Dala also accused the Attorney General, Helder Pitta Grós, of being "a person without probity" for being a shareholder of companies - which he did not specify - and accused "a considerable group of magistrates" of the PGR of being involved in mafia schemes and extortion.

"We have an extremely committed OPG, which means that the fight against corruption is compromised because the OPG itself is a rotten structure that has corrupt prosecutors," Nuno Dala denounced, claiming Pitta Grós' resignation.

One of the cases presented was that of businessman Francisco Yoba Capita, who this Wednesday witnessed being the victim of persecution, having assured that he has already formalized complaints against the former deputy prosecutor Beato Manuel Paulo, because of alleged harassment of his wife, also a magistrate, among others.

The businessman claims that the former deputy prosecutor's involvement was due to the fact that he tried to collect a debt from a colonel in the Presidential Guard Unit (UGP), José Ricardo Tchiwana, for a transport service.

However, he says these complaints stayed "in the drawer" because "they are the same people who handle the cases".

Francisco Yoba Capita also has lawsuits running against him, on charges of fraud and defamation.

The businessman complains that he has become a target to be shot, together with his family, and guarantees that he is suffering death threats and intimidation from Pitta Grós and Beato Manuel Paulo and other prosecutors.
