Government says Pompeo's visit is a sign of support for João Lourenço's reforms

The visit by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to Angola is “a sign of support for João Lourenço's reforms and governance strategy”, said the minister of Foreign Affairs this Thursday in Luanda.

Mike Pompeo travels to Luanda for a meeting with President João Lourenço on 17 February, a visit that fits, according to Manuel Augusto, "in the consolidation" of relations between the two countries, "which are excellent".

“I visited Washington last year and this reciprocal visit will serve to discuss matters of common interest,” said the head of diplomacy, stressing that the executive also sees Pompeo's visit as “a sign of support for reforms and strategy ”that has been followed by João Lourenço.

On the part of Angola, it also corresponds to a “reaffirming” of the country's will to be inserted “in an international context” and to be seen “as a good person”, added the minister.

According to a note released on Wednesday by the US State Department, the focus of the visit will be "anti-corruption and democratization efforts", as well as bilateral economic relations with Angola, in a meeting where the Minister of Business will also be present. Foreigners, Manuel Augusto.

"Mike Pompeo will also meet with economic agents and the business community to discuss the fight against corruption and growing bilateral trade and investment opportunities," the note added.

Luanda and Washington have been strengthening their relations, highlighting in this initiative the visit of João Lourenço to Washington while still Minister of Defense in May 2017.

In July 2019, the two countries signed another memorandum of understanding on security and public order that provides for the exchange of information between law enforcement agencies in both countries.

In 2020, 27 years of bilateral relations will be celebrated, with Angola being the third largest trading partner of the United States of America (USA) in sub-Saharan Africa.
