The statement published by spokesman Morgan Ortagus reveals that the objectives of the visit are to discuss "anti-corruption and democratization efforts", as well as bilateral economic relations with Angola, in a meeting where the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto, will also be present.

"Mike Pompeo will also meet with economic agents and the business community to discuss the fight against corruption and the growing bilateral trade and investment opportunities," he adds.

This year it will be the 27th of bilateral relations, with Angola being the third largest trading partner of the United States of America (USA) in sub-Saharan Africa.

The administration of former US President Barack Obama had assumed three strategic partners in Africa: Angola, South Africa and Nigeria.

The U.S. Department of State states that U.S. assistance focuses on health, military training, defense, the environment, and tourism.

The stop in Luanda on 17 February is part of the US Secretary of State's trip to five other countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East between 13 and 22 February.

Mike Pompeo will be in Germany on 14 February, Senegal on 15 and 16, Angola the next day, Ethiopia from 17 to 19 and finally Saudi Arabia and Oman until 21 February.
