Angola plans to strengthen cooperation with Germany on renewable energy, urban mobility or health, as part of Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to the country on Friday, the foreign minister said this Thursday.

In a press conference on the visit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto, stressed that Germany is already a "traditional partner" of Angola, where it has installed a "set of companies that have a direct impact" on the economy of the country and the living conditions of the population.

According to the minister, Merkel's visit is "another step in the consolidation of bilateral relations between the two countries".

Manuel Augusto hopes that the meeting between the chancellor and the president, João Lourenço, "will strengthen this relationship" and materialize in the implementation of concrete projects, saying that "sectors in which Germany could be useful" have been identified.

The head of the Foreign Relations portfolio said that what Angola needs from Germany "is what all developed countries need", namely greater participation in the area of infrastructure, especially in terms of electricity production, and it will also have "much to benefit" in the field of industry.

The government also has "great expectations" as to the consolidation of some ideas and projects in the area of urban mobility.

"We hope that with German cooperation we can find solutions to improve the traffic and mobility of the inhabitants of Luanda," said the minister.

The area of health is another area where Angola wants to "benefit from the capacity of German industry, but also from its capacity of management and hospital construction," he said.

Angola also wants to "find a space" for the development of renewable energies.

As part of Angela Merkel's visit, legal instruments are to be signed, on which Manuel Augusto has not gone into detail.

"We've had an exchange of delegation visits in recent weeks and all this movement has aimed to prepare for this official visit by the Chancellor [so] it's good that the agreements are announced after they are signed," he said.

He said that Angola has "financial facilities that Germany can create so that the economic actors of the two countries can act," saying that "tomorrow [Friday] it will be known at what level the cooperation will take place".

According to the minister, the state has no debts with Germany, although there may be "business facilities" and will "seek to use facilities that it has not yet used".

Manuel Augusto highlighted the 8th Angola-German Economic Forum as one of the "high points" of this visit.

The forum counts with the two heads of government in the opening, also participating the Ministers of State of Economic and Social Development, Mineral Resources and Oil, Energy and Water, Agriculture and Forestry, Economy and Planning, Construction and Public Works and Transport.

According to a note from the Civil House of the President of the Republic, Angela Merkel will arrive in Luanda from South Africa, having a scheduled meeting with the Head of State, João Lourenço, during the morning of February 7.

In the afternoon, Chancellor and João Lourenço will chair the opening of the German-Angolan Economic Forum.

Merkel will also visit the Museum of Anthropology, which has started a cooperation programme with the Goethe-Institut Angola and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

She will also visit a German company in Luanda and meet Angolans who have studied in Germany.

This is Chancellor Angela Merkel's second visit to Angola, the first of which took place in 2011, when a broad partnership between the two countries was agreed.

João Lourenço visited Germany in August 2018 and met Chancellor Merkel again in New York in September.
