Covid-19: number of cases in Africa rises five percent in a week to 9.8 million

The number of covid-19 cases in Africa rose five percent in a week, to 9.8 million, resulting in 229.7 thousand deaths, announced Thursday the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa). CDC).

"The number of reported cases of covid-19 infection in Africa is 9,886,819, which represents 3.3 percent of the total reported cases globally," said John Nkengasong at the usual weekly press conference broadcast in the format from Addis Ababa, the headquarters of Africa CDC.

Of the 9.8 million cases, 8.8 million people have recovered from the disease, which is to say that 89 percent of Africans infected with covid-19 have recovered.

Looking at the weekly evolution of the disease, the Africa CDC director noted that "in the week of December 27th to January 2nd, compared to the week of December 20th to 26th, there were a total of 299,370 new cases, showing an increase 5% compared to the previous week".

At the press meeting, Nkengasong named São Tomé and Príncipe as one of the countries that entered the fourth wave, along with Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Morocco, Niger, Senegal and Sierra Leone, who join the 42 countries that were already suffering this fourth wave last week.

The vast majority of African countries (95 percent, or 52 countries) are still going through the third wave, pointed out the official, stressing that the evolution of the vaccination process will be fundamental for the evolution of the disease on the African continent.

Regarding the Ómicron variant, Nkengasong said that there are 33 African countries where this variant is already in circulation, which represents an increase of nine countries since the last press conference, including the Portuguese-speaking Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique.

Covid-19 has caused 5,456,207 deaths worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.

A new variant, Ómicron, considered worrisome and highly contagious by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been detected in southern Africa, but since the South African health authorities issued the alert on 24 November, infections in the skin have been reported. 110 countries less, being dominant in Portugal.
