Youth march on Saturday in Uige to "demand alternation in power"

Young activists and civil society actors march next Saturday in the province of Uige to protest against "socio-economic difficulties" and demand "alternation in power in the country," the organization announced this Tuesday.

According to activist Jorge Kisseque, one of the march organizers, the demonstration "will be peaceful" and aims to "demand alternation in power in Angola" because he considers that the "current government is an obstacle to building an inclusive Angola for all".

"Preventing in this way the realization of the will of the sovereign people, as is the case with the non-fixing of the date of the local authorities, the non mobilization of multiple conditions for the creation of a health system, education, basic sanitation, access to water, employment, public transportation and quality," said Jorge Kisseque, in declarations to Lusa.

The march scheduled for Saturday should take place under the slogan "45 years is a lot, MPLA out", because, for the activist, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) "is responsible for the basic problems that affect thousands of Angolans for 45 years.

"As is clear, with the MPLA in power these basic problems will not be solved," he argued, inviting citizens of the remaining provinces to show solidarity with the initiative.

Kisseque, who says he was "shot seven times in the foot" in August 2020, the day before a demonstration he organized, also considers that "alternation to power is the only option for Angolans to have equal opportunities.

"And contribute to the building of a socially just Angola," he noted.

According to the activist, the government and the provincial police command in Uige "have already been informed about the demonstration" and a meeting between the march organizers and the local police is scheduled for Friday morning.

"We hope that the national police will ensure our peaceful demonstration and we ask the international community and Amnesty International to accompany us so that what happened in August 2020 when I was shot does not happen," he concluded.

At the end of last year, the country was the scene of protests against a growing discontent with the governance of President João Lourenço, including one on November 11, the day the country marked 45 years of independence. Demonstrations that were dispersed by the police and in which several activists were arrested.
