Covid-19: Africa with 682 more dead and 21,548 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has registered 682 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 67,928 deaths, and 21,548 new cases, according to the most recent pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of cases is 2,852,010 and there are now 2,359,506 recovered, plus 15,656 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region with 1,249,423 cases and 32,140 deaths.

In this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 in the continent, accounts for a total of 1,113,349 infections and passed this Tuesday the 30,000 dead (30,011).

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 949,591 cases of infection and 24,924 deaths.

East Africa registers 326,542 infections and 6047 deaths, West Africa has 250,414 infections and 3324 deaths, while Central Africa registers 76,040 cases and 1493 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 7863 deaths and 143,464 infected, followed by Morocco, with 7538 deaths and 443,802 infected.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 4862 deaths and 144,796 infected, Algeria, with 2777 deaths and 100,645 cases, Ethiopia, with 1950 deaths and 125,919 infections, and Kenya, with 1686 deaths and 96,908 infected.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 408 deaths and 17,684 cases, followed by Mozambique (171 deaths and 19,463 cases), Cape Verde (113 deaths and 11,949 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5,279 cases), Guinea-Bissau (45 deaths and 2446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1014 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,843,631 deaths as a result of more than 85 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
