The teams from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique will integrate different groups in the second qualifying phase of the African zone for the World Cup.
Angola will face Group F, Egypt, Gabon and Libya, while Guinea-Bissau (Group I) will face Morocco, Guinea and Sudan. The Cape Verdeans will play in Group C, facing Nigeria, Central African Republic and Liberia, while Mozambique are in Group D, along with Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Malawi.
Algeria, winner of the African Cup of Nations in 2019, are in Group A, with Burkina Faso, Niger and Djibouti.
In all the groups of the portuguese-speaking teams are countries that have already become African champions (Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt and Morocco).
In July, the African Football Confederation (CAF) announced the format used in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. After a first round with 28 teams (ranked between 27 and 54 places in the CAF ranking), in a two-handed decision, the 14 winners of the qualifiers advanced to the second round.
The 14 teams in the first round join the 26 teams (ranked between the first and 26th places in the CAF ranking) in the second round, with a total of 40 teams (10 groups of four teams, organised by Tuesday's draw).
The first teams of each group in this second round qualify for the third round, in which the 10 teams will play a two-hand play-off, with the five winners of the knockout round in Qatar.
The first phase was played in September 2019, the second phase will be played between 23 March 2020 and 12 October 2021, and the third (and decisive) phase is scheduled for November 2021.
The draw for the African Zone's qualifying round for the World Cup Qatar 2022 was held this Tuesday in Cairo.
