NGO criticizes PR for the “feelless and serene” way it faces teachers’ strike

The Associação Justiça, Paz e Democracia (AJPD) criticized the “feelless and serene” way that the President and his government face the general education teachers' strike, which is in the second phase of the strike, calling for serious negotiation.

:

The AJPD, a non-governmental organization (NGO), states that it has followed with great concern and perplexity the environment and climate of division installed in the public education subsystem as a result of the demands of education agents.

The National Union of Teachers (Sinprof) decreed a national class strike, the first phase of which took place between 23 and 30 November 2022, the second is already underway, between 12 and 16 December, and the second phase between 3 and 31 December January 2023.

“The chief executive and his team were expected to take proactive action in the relationship with Sinprof and its claims, which, in our opinion, are essentially fair, instead of the fearless and serene way of listening to the market in the face of the announcement of the stoppage” , refers to the AJPD, in view of the announcement of the preparation and calling of the strike.

AJPD, in a note made public, also said that it observes with "concern the various acts and attacks that are being committed by the Government through its various agents, some from the Ministry of Education and others from the Ministry of the Interior, to coerce teachers back to school".

Videos and photos from different provinces of Angola circulate on social networks, showing that cleaning staff and security staff at schools have been administering tests, since Monday, as a result of the absence of teachers.

There are also reports of alleged acts of coercion and intimidation of teachers to return to schools.

According to the NGO, acts of the kind are recorded in various parts of Angola, as was the case “in the municipality of Marimba, province of Malanje, where the municipal commander of the National Police, in a pure act of intimidation, prohibited teachers from traveling outside the municipality. ”.

“In clear violation of the right and freedom of movement. This fact occurred last week and audios about what happened are circulating on social networks”, reads the statement.

The AJPD also drew the attention of parents and guardians to the fact that “the Angolan executive leaves the teaching and learning process in the care of people who are strangers and alien to the daily lives of students and teaching”.

“Coincidence or not, the fact is that in the past month of October, a group of students, teenagers, held a march to claim the lack of desks in the classroom, and for this fact occurred the suspension of teacher Diavava Bernardo, supposedly, for leading the aforementioned protest!”, he stressed.

AJPD also appeals to the executive to “pay greater attention to education in Angola, to the challenges presented by Sinprof, included in its list of demands, initiating a serious and fair negotiation with a view to putting an end” to the stoppage.
