Covid-19: Africa with 348 more deaths and 17,823 more infected in 24 hours

Africa has registered another 348 deaths due to covid-19 and added 17,823 new cases in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 56,337 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the African continent now has a total of 2,379,094 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in the 55 member states of the African Union.

The number of people recovered in the last 24 hours was 9004, for a total of 2,013,989.

Southern Africa is the most affected region, with 967,747 cases of infection and 25,018 registered deaths. In this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 in the continent, accounts for a total of 860,964 confirmed infections and 23,276 deaths due to the disease.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 826,425 cases of infection and 21,560 deaths.

East Africa accounts for 297,888 cases and 5558 deaths, West Africa has 218,422 infections with 2976 deaths, while Central Africa has 68,612 cases and 1225 deaths, the same recorded on Saturday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 6920 deaths and 121,575 infected, followed by Morocco, which registers 6624 deaths, but more than triple the number of infection cases from the previous country: 399,609.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 3894 dead and 111,361 infected, Algeria, with 2596 deaths and 92,102 cases, Ethiopia, with 1806 deaths and 116,769 cases, and Kenya, with 1587 deaths and 91,892 infected.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 371 deaths and 16,188 cases, followed by Mozambique (142 deaths and 16,954 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,357 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5,185 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2444 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1009 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,605,583 deaths as a result of more than 71.6 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
