PGR challenges former PR children to show “evidence” about persecution

The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) challenged the children of former President José Eduardo dos Santos to lodge "substantiated evidence" complaints about alleged persecution and threats they claim to be targeted.

:

"No, they [the sons of the former president] have to be more concrete and say what kind of persecution there is. We cannot file lawsuits under very abstract things," said Helder Pitta Grós in Luanda.

In May, Welwitschia 'Tchizé' dos Santos, daughter of José Eduardo dos Santos, who in October lost his term as a deputy in the legislature (2017-2022) due to prolonged absence in plenary meetings, said she was "unintentionally" out of the country due to to her daughter's illness and for several months was being "intimidated" by leaders of the MPLA.

To Lusa, 'Tchizé', a former MPLA member (who has been in power since 1975), said she was threatened with death in plenary by a party colleague for not voting the way "he understood" and being told " to be careful because she could be poisoned, "a situation that affects you and your family".

This Friday, when asked if the complaints filed by José Eduardo dos Santos's children "are unfounded", Helder Pitta Grós considered that they "do not present any proof" for proper follow-up.

"How can I assess if the allegations are unfounded, if the person submitting them has no proof and no tip of the iceberg to work with," asked the PGR on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of 70 new deputy prosecutors general.

In the country or abroad, noted the prosecutor, "the important thing is to make the complaint and gather or tell the necessary evidence."

The MPLA Political Bureau approved on 29 November the removal of Welwitschia dos Santos from membership of the ruling party's central committee and the two-year suspension of the militant status.

The sanctions proposed by the discipline and audit committee were approved at the fourth ordinary meeting of the Political Bureau, led by party leader João Lourenço.

The MPLA's decision-making body justifies the decision taken by the fact that the daughter of former MPLA leader José Eduardo dos Santos violated the basic principles of the party statutes and code of ethics.
