Portugal sent another 453,600 doses of vaccines against covid-19 to Angola, through the Covax (global access to covid-19 vaccines) initiative, announced on Saturday by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

"Portugal continues to support Angola in the fight against the pandemic and, two days after the last donation, delivered, through the Covax mechanism, an additional batch of 453,600 doses of vaccines against covid-19 (Janssen)", reads a statement released on Saturday by the MNE.

According to the tutelage, with this donation, "under the second phase of the Action Plan in the health response to the covid-19 pandemic between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor, the total number of vaccines sent to Angola amounts to more than one million and eight hundred thousand doses (1,851,200 doses)".

The MNE recalls that "Portugal assumed the political commitment to make available to the PALOP and Timor-Leste at least 5 percent of the vaccines against covid-19 purchased by Portugal, a commitment that was reinforced by Portugal during the CPLP Summit that took place last July in Luanda".

According to data from the Angolan authorities, until last weekend, the cumulative number of people vaccinated in Angola with one dose was more than 6.9 million people, which corresponds to a coverage of 44.27 percent of the target population, and those receiving the full dose were over 3.2 million, corresponding to a coverage of 20.80 percent.

Angola has recorded, since March 2020, more than 65 thousand positive cases of covid-19.

Covid-19 has caused at least 5,286,793 deaths worldwide, among more than 267.88 million infections by the new coronavirus registered since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the most recent report by the Agence France-Presse.

In Portugal, since March 2020, 18,645 people have died and 1,190,409 cases of infection have been recorded, according to data from the Directorate-General for Health.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.

A new variant, Omicron, classified as "worrying" by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been detected in southern Africa, but since the South African health authorities raised the alert on 24 November, infections in the skin have been reported. at least 57 countries from all continents, including Portugal.
